  • Think of sarashi as a reusable Japanese cheesecloth – but with some important differences. Its fabric is finer, softer, and more versatile.

Traditionally in Japanese kitchens, sarashi is used to strain dashi, squeeze excess water from cooked vegetables, or drain water from tofu. In tofu making, it’s also used to wrap the hot curds. Additionally, it serves as a reusable alternative to paper towels for wiping up spills.

This sarashi cloth is made from 100% pure cotton in Osaka’s Sakai neighborhood. Each package contains a 35cm x 10 meter length of cloth to be cut to your desired size.

You can reuse this sarashi several times. After each use, rinse it thoroughly in hot water without soap (as soap residue is nearly impossible to remove). Dry it completely after washing. As a general rule: when the food smell no longer washes out, it’s time to replace it.

Fun fact: sarashi has also been used traditionally as an undergarment in Japan.
