When Matsuda-san took us to see Kobayashi-san, the potter who makes these delightful pieces fully by hand, we witnessed her doing one of the things she does best: constantly improving the design of cookware. On this day she worked with Kobayashi-san to slightly change the dimensions of the lid so that it would store better and not break as easily. It is this attention to detail and relentless devotion to improvement that makes Matsuda-san's products so unique.
This three-piece set consists of a pan with handle, a pot, and a lid. It is perfect for little side dishes or for a personal meal. The lid fits on both the pan and the pot, and the pot can even be used as a bowl. The form and function in this set in wonderful.
Can be used on gas burners, in ovens and in the microwave.
One of go-to dishes Greg makes with this set is Okayu (Japanese rice porridge). He'll make the porridge in the pot and while that is cooking, he'll sauté mushrooms in sesame oil in the pan. To finish he folds the sautéd mushrooms into the porridge. That's comfort in a bowl.

Care and Usage Instructions from Jizai Dougu:
How to season your Stackable Small Clay Pot Set
-
Before the first use, put a small amount of cold cooked rice, fill it with water up to 80%, and slowly cook the porridge on low heat. This is to seal the pores of the pot and to make it sturdy.
- After leaving it as is overnight, take out the porridge, wash and dry it thoroughly before using it again. Dry it for at least a full day.
The bottom of the pot may slightly crack when used, but this will not affect its use. If any liquid leaks out, repeat the above two steps.
Additional Handling Notes
- Do not heat the pot with a wet bottom, as this may cause it to crack. When the bottom is wet, wipe it well before using.
- Adjust the heat/flame to contact only the bottom, not the edge of the pot.
- Never heat the empty pot or use it to fry food (e.g., tempura). This can cause cracks and is very dangerous.
- Do not soak in water for a long period of time.
- Moisture can easily attract mold, so dry it completely before storing it.
- If burnt food or other debris gets stuck to the pot, fill it with water, leave it for a while, and then scrub with a scrubbing brush to remove it.
